Dive Review:
Diving out of Portland on July 8th bought the usual excellent weather that Pete always orders (and gets!) for his dives. The previous few days had been rather breezy but Sunday came and we had a light SW wind, and sunshine to boot. The conditions were perfect to dive the Blackhawk as planned, if only we could find it. And if we could find it, would we be able to see it!

With Andy coxing, Pete spotting and six divers on board, Len, Rita, Dan, Lance, Ian and Phil, we set of in high spirits and unreasonably high hopes. Little did they know that the probability was a seabed survey!

Amazingly, with the aid of our new grapple hook, we found the wreck without too much trouble. It gets better. There was around 6m viz. All divers returned to say it was a great dive, Len even went so far as to say that it was his best dive ever... on the Blackhawk. We returned to Castletown for a celebratory cup of tea and burger before a fast drift just south of Grove Point. Rita was overjoyed to spot an unusual crab which she later (eventually) identified as a velvet swimming crab. An unusual find bearing in mind that there are only a few million (billion maybe) of them down there!

The obligatory pub on the way home was very welcome and a good excuse to avoid the traffic, which it did.

All in all a very successful and enjoyable day out.

Messages from the committee

Deborah Davis (Social Secretary) –
The Christmas Party will be held on Saturday 1 December 2007 at The Bull Hotel, Gerrards Cross (same venue as last year). I am still waiting for details of the menu and prices but expect it to be similar to last year - choice of 3 starters, main courses and puds plus 1/2 bottle of wine for £42.50 per person. At the moment I just need numbers of those interested but will need to confirm by 1st week in September. Let me know by email if you are interested and I can make sure that enough spaces are booked for us.

Shopping tip

Tip 1 – You can Never have enough shoes.

Tip 2 – Fins count as shoes (well they go on your feet!).
